AGA

AGA

An AGA works by storing heat in cast iron, so rather than switch burners on and off, the cook moves pots between ovens and plates that each hold a different steady temperature.

What AGA makes

AGA builds heat-storage cookers in the British tradition, cast in iron and finished in vitreous enamel across a wide color palette. The classic models, offered in 2, 3, 4, and 5-oven configurations, carry separate ovens tuned for roasting, baking, simmering, and warming, plus boiling and simmering hotplates under insulated covers. Modern versions such as the Total Control and Dual Control lines let each oven and plate be switched on and off or programmed, so the cooker no longer has to run continuously. Alongside the traditional heat-storage cookers, AGA builds companion modules, conventional ranges, and cookers that pair a cast-iron section with a gas or induction cooktop. The look is unmistakable: a heavy, rounded enamel body meant to anchor a kitchen and, in the always-on models, to warm the room around it.

How the heat works

The engineering idea is thermal mass. An AGA holds a large amount of cast iron that absorbs heat and radiates it gently and evenly, so its ovens cook by steady radiant heat rather than by a fan forcing hot air. Cooks describe the result as gentle and forgiving, with roasts and bread staying moist because the heat is even and the air is not being blown dry. Each oven sits at its own fixed temperature, so cooking is a matter of choosing the right compartment rather than dialing a number. In the traditional always-on models the stored heat also warms the kitchen. The modern Total Control line adds electronic switching, so the same cast-iron cooking can be turned off when it is not needed. The enamel finish, fired onto the iron, carries the color and protects the body.
